Furthermore, OutSystems provides a suite of tools that can be used to manage every aspect of each environment’s parameters as well as monitoring the health and performance of each deployed application or module.
Recent global events have certainly highlighted what has been an ongoing and growing need for enterprises to build applications quickly. The pandemic underscored this need, but ever-increasing developer workloads and rapidly changing business needs are driving the demand for a new approach to application development in the enterprise. We see more and more businesses adopting rapid application development solutions, like low-code and other visual development platforms, to speed up and simplify their digital transformation journeys.
For the past 18 months, adoption of low-code / visual development tools has exploded globally, and in developing countries like India, as companies are looking for ways to build applications quickly in response to the pandemic, ever-increasing developer workloads, and changing business needs, we see more and more businesses adopting rapid application development solutions like low-code, no-code, and other visual development platforms to speed up and simplify their digital transformation journeys. Based on Forrester Research, investment in the low-code market segment is expected to reach US$21.2 billion by 2022, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate of approximately 40%.
In India, the market for these rapid application development approaches is expected to bring major disruption in the coming years as we witness the technology penetrating more and more vertical industries. Along with the IT and telecom verticals, the BFSI and retail sectors are expected to contribute largely due to the rise in demand for the technology in financial procedures like payments and online banking.
AI’s role in the future of application development has always been tantalizingly controversial, with a storm of opinions gracing many a conversation about its potential. But it is becoming very clear: AI has the power to create far more possibilities than it limits. This year, AI-backed development will raise the bar yet again with increasingly strategic and innovative uses. Usable by both professional developers and amateurs alike to amplify their productivity, AI delivers heightened acceleration and accuracy in application building and will prove to boost innovation and creativity rather than hinder it. The world, currently at its peak in software augmentation and automation, is undergoing a paradigm shift and developers will soon come to see that AI is an essential tool to have in their kit, one that allows them to push the creative boundaries of their jobs and innovate.
While the OutSystems platform includes a rich collection of AI-powered tools and automation that is capable of solving a broad range of customer solutions – everything from application modernization and workplace innovation to business process automation and customer experience transformation – we will continue to improve upon the capabilities that deliver development efficiency, that enables team collaboration, that strengthen IT governance and that make applications adaptable enough to keep pace with the imperatives of the business. Furthermore, OutSystems will continue to add state-of-the-art features that are made easily accessible through its visual, model-driven approach such as AI-enabled chatbots, connections to the latest SaaS offerings like Snowflake, or one-click creation of PWAs.
In the past 18 months, we are seeing more APAC organizations turning to low-code / modern app development platforms to keep up with their digital transformation goals. Benefits of such tools and platforms include faster app development about customer experience, business analytics, eCommerce, and IoT for competitive advantage; changes developers’ career trajectories towards strategic business alignment; LOB buy-in for digital transformation strategies through “democratization of coding”; and escape from the legacy gridlock by migrating, modernizing or replacing obsolete apps, and augmenting existing systems with new capabilities cost-effectively.
We are seeing more and more emerging use cases across various verticals in APAC especially India – all of which are looking to transform and digitize their operations and processes to become agile. These include:
Banking and Finance
Business intelligence and analytics for customized insight into enterprise-specific data sets
Public Sector
Business process and management custom enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, finance, human resource, and office management applications
IoT, particularly for monitoring, maintenance, and optimization of sensor-based assets or fleets
Web integration connecting website data to automated workflows from lead tracking to bookings and support requests
Offline-to-online, including those using QR codes and barcodes to manage supply chain, equipment, and other physical capital
Collaboration functionality tailored to organizational structures and culture, including chat and project management applications
In fact, according to a study by IDC and OutSystems, 59% of APAC organizations are already using low code / no-code / visually guided tools and development platforms, with 13% more planning to adopt them within the next 18 months.
Some of the common challenges in software application development faced by organizations are integrating different systems, technologies, and environments, talent scarcity, and a lack of involvement by business users. Developers typically want to spend less time tracking bugs, debugging them, and hard coding. Developers have shared that they wish to prioritize more value-added tasks like security analysis, vulnerability testing, gauging software requirements, and designing software.
On top of that, according to a recent study by IDC and OutSystems, some of the challenges faced by organizations in Indian software application development include: Educate leadership about secure DevOps (58%); Secure the DevOps process (56%); Making sure DevOps team are multidisciplinary (53%).
Due to the pandemic, the adoption of low-code tools has recently exploded globally. In developing countries like India, companies are looking for ways to build applications quickly in response to the pandemic, ever-increasing developer workloads, and changing business needs. We see more businesses adopting rapid application development solutions like low-code, no-code, and other visual development platforms to speed up and simplify their digital transformation journeys. According to the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms report,  by 2023, over 50% of medium to large enterprises will have adopted an LCAP as one of their strategic application platforms.
With India being the fastest-growing tech hub in the world and also the IT hub to many of the best international technology companies, the country is leading the technology trends worldwide. However, Indian developers remain under intense pressure to deliver software at lightning speed. DevOps practices are well-entrenched, with the focus turning to secure DevOps, and enterprise-wide data integration. All these trends point to increased demand for solutions that improve developer productivity and speed the development, deployment, and continued evolution of enterprise-class applications. In fact, according to research by OutSystems and IDC on the low-code landscape in Asia-Pacific, 28% of enterprise leaders in India list faster integration of customer feedback to speed software releases as their main business goal.
It is clear that in the post-pandemic future, work will look different: hybrid, digital-first, and cloud-first transformations are par for course now. While COVID-19 has caused many disruptions, it also presented opportunities for digital innovation and differentiation initiatives. As a result, demand for applications to support new business needs is increasing.
NASSCOM reported that India’s SaaS revenue is set to jump 6X to $13-15 billion by 2025. The increased digital consumption (and corresponding demand) has led the Indian SaaS market to grow 1.5X compared to the global market.
Modern application development enables organizations to meet this demand. By using visual, model-driven development, AI-powered tools that improve the entire application lifecycle, and a cloud-native platform, modern application development allow developers to quickly and easily build, deploy and manage the software that makes a difference. With this technology, organizations can design, test, and implement applications inherently faster than traditional development processes. Just as DevOps moved the needle by focusing on development processes rather than IT and networking teams, new technology for high-velocity development allows an organization to design and create applications much more quickly and efficiently. Modern development technologies can also aid in the process of creating bridges between legacy and modern applications, or, in some instances, replacing legacy systems entirely.
As we transition into a post-pandemic era, we will be seeing a surge in customers across the verticals reinventing their workplace with the OutSystems platform and tools by empowering workers to work from anywhere on any device while ensuring maximum security. For example, one of the state governments in India has streamlined their operation process flow for their department through an app that was built on the OutSystems platform. Another example would be a major Indian insurance player that has built multiple apps on OutSystems to streamline processes and internal operations.
To support this evolving hybrid future, OutSystems will continue to support our customers, potential customers looking to embark on their digital transformation journey, as well as the community.
